disaster preparedness

Disaster PreparednessAn important part of sustainability depends on the cooperation and preparation that support a robust community. This information was gathered as a subgroup formed through SSJ3D in October 2014. The following are some key resources leveraging existing progress and information in this area, starting with Hensley neighborhood of District 3.:

– CADRE (Collaborating Agencies’ Disaster Relief Effort):
www.cadresv.org

– San Jose CERT Training (Community Emergency Response Teams):
www.sanjoseca.gov/index.aspx?NID=1405

These resources may both be useful in assisting with and also becoming part as a larger existing network working towards neighborhood asset mapping (from personal and pro skills to physical community assets such as water, fuel, shelter, cots, available org space, food…)

– as part of the larger San José Prepared:

– The Hensley neighborhood has also been working on a CAP grant with the City of San Jose:
www.unscc.org/grants.html

The Hensley CAP grant will work on our Dumpster day, Holiday Neighborhood Celebration, National Night Out, and a Disaster Preparedness event. Our description on that is:  Disaster preparedness Event- Collaborating with the City’s office of emergency services, the Salvation Army, and other key agencies/businesses in our neighborhood, we propose to sponsor a fair and series of workshops to help families be more prepared for disasters. The Disaster Preparedness Fair/Workshops will ensure that many of our neighbors are prepared in case a disaster affects our neighborhood/city. They will also be working closely with their closest neighborhood association—The Japantown Prepared group.
